Yes, that really is a
group of incarcerated men tapping.
They are part of the HARP Program at the county jail in Chesterfield, VA. (HARP stands for Helping Addicts Recover Progressively.)
A number of years ago, in the course of a week, three inmates were released from custody after serving their time and all three died in drug overdoses within the first seven days of their release.
Sheriff Karl Leonard, who is in charge of the facility, decided this had to stop.
Thus, HARP was born!
One of the many tools he provides for both the men and women incarcerated in the facility, as well as the deputies who work there, is tapping.
Tapping now happens daily in the facility.
As part of the 24 Hours of Tapping you will get a chance to hear about tapping in a jail.
- Kerri Rhodes (who leads the program) will share how tapping ended up in the jail
- One of the
deputies will share how she went from thinking tapping was "crazy" to someone who taps daily with the inmates and her fellow staff members
- We will also hear from a number of inmates who not only tap with each other, they have also taught their families how to tap
- Allen (one of the inmates) will even lead us in a few rounds of tapping
