Recently, I visited friends who have two delightful small children.
We were sitting around the kitchen table when their 5-year-old "Bobby" burst through the door in floods of tears.
He flung himself on his mother's lap for a big hug and when he had calmed down a little, she asked him what was going on. This brought on sobs, but eventually, at his mother's encouragement to "use his words," he was able to tell her what had upset him so much.
As he shared, you could see him visibly calming down.
To be honest, I was a little dumbfounded.
I had heard people use the phrase "use your words" as a joke, but I didn't know that
parents really used the phrase with their kids AND it actually worked!
This isn't just true for little ones; it is also true for us adults. The more we can describe our distress and discomfort in words, the easier it is to understand, process, and respond to what is going on.
Unfortunately, the animals we love don't have this luxury.
Sometimes our connection with them is so strong that we know exactly what they need, but that is not always the case.
It’s frustrating when, no
matter how much we love them, we feel powerless to understand what they need in their moments of distress because they can't "use their words".
In all of my years as a tapping practitioner, one of the applications that I am most amazed by is how well tapping works for animal lovers. Tapping is useful when dealing with the emotional ups and downs that go along with
having loving relationships with animals, and it can also calm our animals and improve their physical and emotional well-being.
Over the years, I have shared ideas around this topic here and there to help people tap to support their animals.
Recently, more clients, students, and readers have reached out to ask for detailed guidance on tapping for their pets, so I decided it was time to put all my knowledge, training, and experience in one place…
