Good afternoon,
I want you to think about everything you want to accomplish today. (If you are reading this later in the day, think about what you want to do tomorrow.)
What is the one thing that you are SURE you want to get done, but if you are honest with yourself, you know deep down that it isn't actually going to happen.
What will probably happen next is after you don't do it today, you will plan to do it tomorrow.
Maybe you will do it tomorrow, but in truth, you know it is unlikely.
At a certain point, you will start to beat yourself up for not taking action, give up on the action altogether, or both.
The hidden reason you don't take action!
It makes sense that we avoid taking an action if it is something new to us, we aren't very good at it, or we are nervous about getting our hopes up and concerned that it will go badly.
Here is another key
reason we don't take action: we are worried that we will succeed!
I know that might seem silly, but it's true.
This is what is called an upper limit issue. Upper limit issues come up when success comes with a penalty. For example, "If
I succeed, then everyone will expect me to be successful all the time!"
This creates an upper limit we can't get past because of the risk of incurring more harm than good.
The problem with these types of underlying issues is they can be
really hard to uncover.
If you were afraid of doing something and I asked you, "Why are you afraid?" and "What could go wrong?" you would be able to answer those questions right away.
We are good at foreseeing what might go wrong, BUT we fall
down when it comes to considering the negative consequences of success.
That task you aren't going to do!
Once again, I want you to think about a valuable and useful task that you want to do, but are not going to do.
Think about how it would feel to finally get that task done.
Maybe it is not dramatic, but it would give you relief, clarity, or the sense that you are finally moving forward. Even a small step today has the power to change how you show up tomorrow.
Now I want you to imagine that you not only do the task you are avoiding today, but you do the same thing again tomorrow.
And the next day...
And the next day...
And the day after that.
All of a sudden, you aren't taking just one action, you are taking a whole series of actions that together will create meaningful change in your life.
I truly believe if you take one action a day that you are avoiding, over a short period of time, it will add up to something amazing!
I have seen this happen in my own life and in the lives of my clients.
