"I guess I just need healthier boundaries."
This is what my client "Judy" said, accompanied by a big eye roll.
She wasn't rolling her eyes because of the idea of creating healthy boundaries. It was because she had said that same thing to herself what felt like a million
times before.
I think one of the problems people have with creating boundaries is because of the way we think about them. When we use the word boundary it feels like we are creating a wall and it must keep everything out.
This is problematic for two reasons. First, it is exhausting trying to keep up walls all the time. Second, healthy boundaries aren't walls, they are filters.
Their job isn't to keep everything out, but instead to keep out what is
unhelpful and what is unhealthy. When you change your boundaries from an all-or-nothing wall into a filter, you only let through what is healthy. That makes everything else easier.
Not only are you keeping what drains you at bay, it is actually easier to create filters than it is to hold up walls.
Because this issue is so common, I have written a book called 90 Days of Tapping for Healthy Boundaries. It contains one short daily tapping round on a specific piece of the boundary problem, so you are never asked to fix the whole thing at once.
