It seems like whenever I open a web browser something has changed from the night before. I never know when the changes are coming but all of a sudden YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, or Facebook look different.
I know they are trying to make my life easier with the change, but it never feels like it helps (and least not in the short term when I feel lost).
This week it's Gmail where the changes are being rolled out slowly so may not yet have have hit your inbox.
Gmail is now creating tabs to organize your incoming emails for you. Each email is categorized and filtered into a tab.
It sounds great in theory and in the long run it will be a good thing. In the short term it will take some getting used to.
What This Means For You
Once the tabs are enabled every email newsletter you receive (including this one) will be filed in the "Promotions" tab. Even if they aren't selling or promoting anything, Gmail is categorizing them all as promotions.
So fear not, you will still receive all the great content that arrives in your inbox every day. The trick is knowing where to look for it.
You Have 3 Options
There are three simple ways you can respond to this change.
1) Turn Off Google Tabs
If you are like me and liked things the way they were before the change you can turn it off. It takes just 3 clicks of your mouse. Here is a 27 second video on how to turn it off:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paT0cNNes40
2) You Can Move The Emails You Must Read (Like TappingQandA!) To Your Priority Inbox
You might love the change, but want a few select newsletters to show up with your regular emails. To do this all you need to do is drag one of the emails from someone like me over to the "Priority" tab. Then click "yes" when asked if you want to do this for all your emails from this person. From that moment forward those emails will go to the right place.
3) You Can Use The New Layout
You might think this is the greatest thing since frozen yogurt and decide to not change a thing. If this is the case, just make sure you check the "Promotions" tab regularly.
