Good afternoon,

I want you to take a good look at the photo above. (If you don't see the image, make sure your email program is allowing you to see it by clicking "show images". You can also see the photo here.)

The photo was taken six years ago and there are a few points I'd like you to note:

  • When the photo was taken it was 95˚ F/35˚ C and 80% humidity.
  • My shirt is actually light orange, but appears dark because it is completely soaked through with sweat.
  • The same with my hair. That is not hair gel. All sweat.
  • For reasons unknown, the windows are welded shut.
  • There is no electricity in the town, so no fans or air conditioning.

Six years ago I was part of a team of tapping practitioners from around the world who traveled to the Philippines eight months after typhoon Haiyan (called Yolanda in the Philippines). Haiyan displaced 4 million people and damaged or destroyed over 1 million homes.

The photo is of me tapping with a group of middle school kids.

What you can't tell in the photo is what's on the pieces of paper on the floor. They are drawings that the kids did of the day of the storm. To be honest, I'm glad you can't see those drawings because it's heartbreaking to see that sort of destruction drawn by a child.

I am still a little amazed that I was lucky enough to be a part of that experience.

When I returned from the trip my friend Helen McConnell interviewed me to help me to process the experience.

As you might know, I have been reorganizing the podcast archives and republishing old episodes on Mondays. Before I listened to this interview again I wondered if it would be worth re-sharing.

It really is! Especially in the face of upheaval we are experiencing in the world right now.

You can hear my reflections and most importantly what I learned from my time tapping with those who had lived through a major tragedy.

I hope you are having a great Monday,

Gene
