Good morning,

In late May I was approached by a publisher to write a book on introducing people to tapping for work on trauma. The publisher provided me with an outline of the book to speed the writing process along because they wanted the manuscript in five weeks.

The publisher specializes in books on personal development, but this was only their second book on tapping so much of the outline was based on online research conducted by their development team.

For the most part, the outline they provided was great (especially for people who don't specialize in tapping), but there were a number of ideas that needed to be updated. Most of the errors in the document were old or just plain wrong, but have been repeated so many times by so many different practitioners and trainers that they've come to be generally accepted as true.

This happens with all kinds of communities as they grow and develop. Before there is a lot of research or standardized training, the exchange of information is like a giant game of telephone where certain ideas slowly morph over time into something that sounds true, but is not.

As a tapping community we do ourselves a disservice when we share information that is untrue, or information we can't readily explain.

To help us all do a better job of talking about how we know tapping works (other than by first hand accounts) and explaining why it works, I had a conversation with David Feinstein.

David does a wonderful job of providing six criteria we can use to measure whether tapping is effective and if it is actually the tapping working, not just the words we use. Then, using the findings of the latest research, David explains why tapping is effective.

I think it is important that we understand these ideas for two reasons. First, it will make it easier for us to share with people who aren't experienced in tapping. Second, we can get more out of tapping with a clear understanding of how it works.

If you ever try to share tapping with others, you must listen to this episode.
