Happy Friday,
Two of the sessions for my Mastering the Art of Delivery training are on the subject of healing vocabulary. The first session explores the words that we can use as practitioners to help our clients achieve results more rapidly. The second session is on the words our clients use to describe their issues, which provide us with clues about root causes.
The foundation of the teaching in the second session is this:
We do not emotionally respond to the world as it is. We do not emotionally respond to the world as we think it is. We emotionally respond to the world as we describe it.
This means that the words we choose to describe ourselves, our circumstances, and the world have the biggest impact on our emotional response.
If you have been using my resources for a while, you know that my favorite example of this is the statement "Everyone at work hates me." If you describe work as a place where everyone hates you, you will be walking through the front door of your workplace looking for proof that everyone hates you. It's highly unlikely that everyone hates you, but if your perceptions and actions are being guided by that thought, it will dictate your emotional response.
Another version of this is the words we use to describe ourselves with statements such as "I am a hard worker," "I am valued because I am helpful," or "The men in my family have never been lucky in love." These are statements about identity and they guide our response to the world.
On the surface this isn't a bad thing. It is good to have standards to aim for and to understand who we are, but when we start to beat ourselves up emotionally for not living up to these identities, it becomes problematic.
This week I have:
- a reflection on how we pick up these identities
- how to determine if these identities are helpful or harmful
- how to tap to let go of the identities that are no longer helpful
I have also included a tap-along audio and pdf of the tapping script that you can print out.
Let go of the identities that are not serving you: http://tappingqanda.com/475
I'd love to hear how this works for you,
