Good morning,
Back in the fall I was working with a client I'll call "Jane" on an issue in her business. She wanted to take a specific course of action, but no matter how many times she put the task on her to-do list, it just didn't get done.
After asking her a few questions we progressed to some inner child work with her twelve-year-old self.
When Jane was twelve she experienced a very violent incident at home that changed her relationship with her father forever. There were no physical injuries, but families are complicated and fragile structures and there was no going back from what had happened.
As we were tapping and working on healing Jane's twelve-year-old self, Jane said "I just wish that my twelve-year-old self had handled it better."
I stopped her and said:
"I have another way you might consider thinking about that moment and that relationship. It was totally unfair that your twelve-year-old self had to deal with such a difficult and traumatizing incident. She did nothing wrong. She actually did everything right in the moment, but because of someone else's actions,
you were punished AND – most importantly – your twelve-year-old self was not equipped to deal with that situation.
Because of her creativity, her intelligence, and her ingenuity she survived something that was really tough, and the fact that you are here today and thriving in your life is because of the choice she made.
I don't think she failed you. I think she is a hero."
Jane paused and said, "I think you are mostly right. She wasn't just a hero. She was a real live superhero!"
We then spent some time tapping in gratitude and honoring the twelve-year-old version of Jane.
I share this story with you for two reasons.
First, I think it is instructive to look at our past choices. We tend to judge our past choices on who we are now, not who we were then. When we recognize choices in the context in which they were made, it is easier to be gentle with ourselves.
Second, I have no idea where my words came from when we were tapping. I had never framed any inner child work in that way before. Since then I have thought about my approach a lot and I have refined my experience in that particular session into a great tool that I now use all the time with my clients.
This technique is what I am going to be teaching in the March Art of Delivery Monthly session.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, Art of Delivery Monthly is where I teach a new tool or technique every month so that you can move beyond the basic recipe of tapping and get more out of each session.
Every month:
- I teach a new tool
- I demonstrate the tool with the class and answer questions
- Participants then have the opportunity to try out the tool in small groups
- After trying it out, I answer even more questions on how it worked in practice and what came up
- Each session ends with group tapping on whatever issues you want to address
I teach the class twice so that all time zones are covered. This month the classes are at 8 PM Eastern on Tuesday March 9th and 12 noon Eastern on Sunday March 14th.
If you sign up, you can attend either or both classes. AND you will get a recording of both classes no matter when you show up. (We even have people who can't attend live and just learn from the recordings.)
Because a new topic is taught every month you can either sign up for a monthly subscription of $27 (and you can cancel anytime, even after only one class) OR you can sign up just for March for $37.
