Years ago, when I was teaching anger management in a county jail, one of my students I'll call "Nathan" had a particularly vivid way of talking about his anger.

 

He called it "The Dragon".

 

He described it as something that would rise up and completely take him over. He would act out of the rage as an almost out-of-body experience where the dragon was in control. After the anger had passed, the dragon would return whence it came and Nathan was left to deal with the aftermath.

 

There has been a lot of interesting research about which comes first. Is it the thought or emotions? From my experience it looks like a circle:

 

 

Emotions lead to reactions which lead to thoughts which lead to emotions which lead to reactions...and so the cycle continues.

 

Even if you aren't regularly dealing with a dragon like Nathan's, I'm sure you have experienced a situation where you were overcome by your emotions and it felt like they had taken over.

 

When this happens it is extremely difficult to remember to tap in the moment.

 

In the July Art of Delivery Monthly class I am offering a twofer.

 

First, I am going to teach you a technique that will make it so much easier to remember tap when you are feeling overcome with emotion in the heat of the moment.

 

Second, I will teach you how to break the cycle of emotion → reaction → thought → emotion → ...

 

My technique will help you to figure out the root cause of the emotional cycle. Finding and tapping for the root cause when you aren't caught up in the grip of intense emotions will allow you to clear an emotional loop more easily.

 

As a bonus, this will also train you to start hearing your thoughts in real time. That means that in future you will be able to hear the thoughts driving your emotional response, giving you the ability to short-circuit the cycle before it takes hold.
