Good afternoon,
Years ago my niece, Milan, was having a rough day. She was in some discomfort, so I asked her what the problem was.
She replied: "My feet are angry!"
That is so beautiful. Not being in pain of course, but the way she perfectly and poetically described what she was experiencing.
Milan was listening to her body AND she wasn't just noticing the pain she was feeling, she was also striving to understand what her body wanted to tell her.
Our bodies are giving us information all day long. It can be in the form of pain (angry feet), via physical sensations (feeling hungry), or in the guise of emotions (butterflies in the stomach).
Our ability to hear and understand what our bodies are telling us is called somatic literacy. Somatic means "of the body" and literacy means "to understand the information".
Somatic literacy is a skill that we can learn and hone.
In the 5 AM Action Club program we spent a little time each morning tapping on the healing power of our bodies and on being open to hearing information from our bodies in order to make healthier choices.
One of the participants I'll call "Linda" sent me an email to tell me about her experience of receiving a clear message from her body in the middle of a run. Even though she hadn't hit her distance goal for the day, her body told her that she needed to stop so it could rest and recover. Linda reported that tuning in
to her body daily allowed her to hear what her body needed during the day when she was usually up in her head and focused on work and intellectual matters.
In this week's podcast I share four simple techniques that you can use to improve your somatic literacy. Just a few minutes a day with any one of these tools will make it so much easier for you to hear the information your body wants you to hear.
Being able to hear this information more clearly means you are much more likely to make healthy choices in response.
In other words: improve your somatic literacy and improve your physical and emotional health.

I'd love to know what you hear from your body as you listen more closely,
