I'm sure you have heard the old saying "If the only tool you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail."

In the context of healing work, if something works, it's all too easy to get into a rut. We can fall into the trap of going back to it again and again, assuming it will have the same results all the time and on all issues.

This is one of the reasons why I don't immediately start tapping with the commonly used set-up phrase "Even though I have this issue, I love and accept myself." Just because self-acceptance is important in healing does not mean that it's always the best starting point.

Over the next two weeks I have something that will help you to break out of your tapping rut to ensure that you are tapping on the right issues, and in the right order.

This week I have a conversation with New York Times bestselling author Rick Hanson. Rick and I talk about the difference between the human needs of safety, satisfaction, and social connection.

We all have each of these needs and each one comes with different problems, so the most effective approach to healing varies.

For example, if you are trying to resolve your difficulty in making social connections with a tool focused on making you feel safe, you won't find relief. Only when we know what type of problem we are seeking to heal can we choose the most effective tool.

Rick does an amazing job of laying out each of these types of needs, how to understand them, and how to find their root causes.

It is important that you listen to this conversation in preparation for next week when I'm going share with you how to use tapping for needs and the issues that come up in each of these three areas.
