Good morning,

There's a very silly podcast I often listen to called The Judge John Hodgman Podcast.

The premise for the show is that the judge hosts a fake internet court where friends and loved ones bring trivial and ridiculous real-life disputes against each other. Each party argues their side of the case and John Hodgman, an actor and writer, then renders his verdict.

Past cases have included how to deal with bats coming through a hole in a house's wall, whether stew can be classified as soup, if it is permissible to pull the stems off tomatoes in the store so they weigh and therefore cost less, and the correct order in which to eat leftovers.

Like I said, silly and humorous disputes.

But the interesting thing about the show is that even though the disputes concern trivial conflicts, John is able to get to the crux of the human condition. The cases end up being about human desire, how we navigate the world, and how we connect with those we love.

Episode 400 features a dispute between spouses. At one point the wife says "I want him to have what he wants. I just want him to want something different."

Has there ever been a more human statement?

"I want him to have what he wants. I just want him to want something different."

So often when we want better for our loved ones, we are caught in this exact place. We see choices and actions they could be taking for what we perceive is a better life AND we know we can't be responsible for someone else's life or emotional state.

This week we talk about and tap about how to navigate that situation.
