You are a bad eyewitness (and it is slowing your healing)

Good morning,

There are a number of fundamental principles that inform my work with clients.

One of them is: We are notoriously poor eyewitnesses to our own experience.

What this means is that when we are explaining the reason we are the way we are, we are often incorrect.

That's not because we are flawed or that we are doing something wrong. Instead, it has to do with the way our brains work.

The human brain doesn't thrive on exact details of why something works the way it does. In the big picture, this is great. It's the reason we are able to learn new skills, solve problems, and figure out what to do next when we encounter something new.

These skills come from a primitive place. Thousands of years ago when our ancient ancestors saw large paw prints in the mud, they figured they were made by something with large teeth, so they'd head in the opposite direction to be safe.

The problem comes when we are wrong. For example, we are faced with a problem, we come up with a logical but incorrect reason for the problem, and then behave as if the story we have concocted is true.

Here is an example from one of my recent client sessions.

My client "Debbie" struggled with how she looked. On an intellectual level she was happy with her appearance, but when she looked in the mirror she thought she was too fat. Debbie clearly remembered a period from her childhood in which her classmates had often teased her about her weight.

Debbie spent a lot of time tapping around this memory, but no matter how much she tapped on it, she couldn't budge her emotional dislike of her figure.

Logically it all makes sense. If people make fun of us for our weight, it's unsurprising that weight issues are the result.

When Debbie started working with me she told me this story and wanted me, with my experience and expertise, to tap on this memory with her. She thought the problem was that she just wasn't good enough at tapping to get the results she wanted.

As we worked together, it turned out her body image issues weren't about this memory, but instead were rooted in beliefs that had been passed on by her parents.

The conclusion that Debbie came to was logical, but incorrect.

That's what I mean by saying we are bad eyewitnesses to our own experience. We are interpreting what we know, but like eyewitness testimony, the results can be flawed.

This week I'm sharing a simple tool you can use to start your day to get you out of your conscious mind. Instead of simply gathering information about our issues from what we think is going on, we will also gather information from our internal wisdom.

Oddly enough, I am going to ask you to imagine that your body is a giant factory. I know it sounds a bit weird, but it works!
