Good morning,
The earliest versions of the seven deadly sins date back to the 4th century and it is amazing how, more than 1600 years later, they still hold some sway over our consciousness.
The most widely recognized list of the sins is: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth.
The idea behind the list is to help us to be mindful of our actions, providing a guide post to help us to lead better lives.
Personally, I take issue with how one of the sins is listed and talked about. Pride.
On many lists pride is replaced with boastful, which I think is better, but I still find it problematic.
In my mind, a boastful person goes on and on about their accomplishments, often in a way designed to make them seem superior to or more important than those around them, and usually with a liberal helping of exaggeration of their successes.
I believe that the feeling of pride is human and healthy.
Being proud of who we are and what we can do means we're much more likely to keep doing it. When we feel a sense of pride and share our accomplishments we let others know that they can seek us out for help in the future.
I want you to feel pride in who you are, what you have done, and what you are capable of doing. That isn't a sin, but an important and worthy feeling.
This week's podcast explores this idea and taps for the cultivation of a healthy sense of pride. In addition to the tap-along audio you can also print out the tapping script.
