Good morning,
About a week and half ago I had a super unproductive day.
I woke up feeling great. Within the first 10 minutes of sitting down to work, my schedule was abandoned because of a technical issue that took me about an hour to fix.
The rest of the day was a wash.
I did accomplish a few of my tasks, mostly by sheer force of will and some productivity tools I'd already put in place. In reality I did the equivalent of about two and half hours of work in the eight hours I sat in my home office.
The next day I spent some time trying to figure out what had gone wrong.
Even though my daily life has changed dramatically here in New York, my work life hasn't changed that much.
I still work with clients on Zoom or Skype. I still record my podcast and videos from my home studio. And, to be honest, because of the extra work I have been doing to create and collect resources in response to the pandemic, I have more to do, not less.
I was stumped as to why I was so unproductive.
Then it dawned on me. Everything that is happening in the world, even when it isn't impacting me directly in the moment, is taking its toll on me in the background.
It is as if I am starting off each morning by paying a 20% emotion tax.
That means that for the rest of the day, at best, I am running at 80% of my usual resources.
Once I realized this, it transformed the way I approach each day.
This week's podcast explores:
- the impact of the 20% emotion tax
- how to structure your work and to-do lists accordingly
- what are reasonable expectations at this time
- how to tap to manage this situation
I also share a tap-along audio and script that I have been using to start each day to diminish the impact of the emotional tax I'm paying AND how to get back on track when my productivity slumps.

Finding clarity about our emotional resources makes it easier to take care of ourselves and to do so with kindness and patience.
I think that this is one of the most important resources I have created recently in response to what we are collectively dealing with at present.

Let me know how it works of you,
Gene
PS: I am still offering 66% off the cost of one-on-one sessions. I know that not everyone can afford to work with me one-on-one, which is why I will continue to create free resources. If you do want to work one-on-one, you can sign up here: 60-Minute Session or 30-Minute Session
