Good morning,
I was working with a client, "Joan", a few weeks ago and she was talking about an ex-boyfriend.
She was telling me about all the ways that he had wrecked her life. He had maxed out her credit card, wrecked her credit rating and, even worse, had practically destroyed her self-esteem with his constant bullying.
Joan was seething as she recounted all this.
Then she said something so insightful: "The worst part about this is that it impacts me every day and I am willing to bet that I don't even cross his mind. He has moved on to someone else and I am just a footnote in his past."
I am so lucky to share those moments when my clients have profound insights like this one!
What Joan was getting to in her statement is that a big part of being able to move on and forgive comes from our own willingness and attitude. Most of the time we think forgiveness is about the person we are forgiving.
Let me be clear, I am not saying that those who hurt us don't have to take responsibility for their actions (they do!), but instead I am saying our ability to heal and move on is more about us and less about the person who hurt us.
Noted author Wayne Dyer was in exactly that situation. In his 30s he was so consumed with anger towards his own father that it was eating him alive from the inside.
Yes, the author of "Your Sacred Self" and "Being in Balance" was so overwhelmed with rage that he had gained a lot of weight and was drinking non-stop.
Before Wayne died last year he did an interview with Nick Ortner about his rage and how he was able to let it go.

It is really worth your time.
Blessings,
Gene
