Good morning,

I was a dorky kid.

So much so that one year I asked for an almanac and an atlas for Christmas just so I could study the facts and figures.

That was my idea of fun when I was ten years old!

Christmas came, I opened my presents, and what did I find? Not the almanac I had asked for, but instead a copy of that year’s Farmers’ Almanac.

If you don't know the Farmers’ Almanac, it is a collection of homespun wisdom on when is the best time to plant your crops and breed your animals. Not what I was looking for or what I needed at that point in my life.

I asked for an almanac.

I received an almanac.

But I didn't get anything near what I wanted.

The same thing can happen to us in business. What we say can be heard by our audience as something completely different. This miscommunication may cause us to lose business from the right clients and attract the wrong ones.

PS: The Farmers’ Almanac became a bit of joke between me and my mother. Every year since I was ten I have received one for Christmas and it’s now a fixture in my bathroom.
